The Danish author Dorothea Gundtoft wrote in her book New Nordic Design:
“For us Scandinavians well-produced, carefully crafted design is just part of everyday life, which we can sometimes take for granted.”
Scandinavia, with its rather chilly climate, and a combination of marine and mountainous landscape, has led to a tradition of product design that has evolved to focus on usefulness and durability. The people in Scandinavia mostly comes from an agricultural background. The reliance on high-quality tools and equipment is still evident. Well-produced, carefully crafted design is widely available and affordable – Nordic design is a part of everyday life.
All the Scandinavian countries – Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Island has developed recognizable designs and products – ceramics, textile, furniture, glass, - with every country having their own histories, traditions and aesthetics. In the 1950s the world really began to take note, and Scandinavian design became a globally recognized and popular design style.
It is however, quite fair to state that Denmark is the most successful country in terms of design, especially during the post wartime. The furniture school at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, led by the legendary furniture designer Kaare Klint, played a vital role in the education of and establishing design foundations for future generations. The Danish designers focused on perfecting the craft of long-lasting furniture, making use of local materials, mostly various types of wood.
Our web-shop is for these reasons predominately filled with high quality vintage Danish design.
