Tias Eckhoff was born in Vestre Slidre in the south eastern part of Norway where he then attended school in Oslo before studying as a potter at the State School of Arts and Crafts between the years of 1945 and 1949, as well as training by taking part in various Danish ceramic workshops.
During the 1950's Tias Eckhoff also was prolific with his designs in flatware, one of his firsts being “Cypress” for Georg Jensen in sterling silver, which he developed in 1953, with its elegant and graceful curves and slightly concave handles, which was quite unlike many of the company's prior designs.
Tias Eckhoff, was among those, who contributed to make Scandinavian Design a concept. He was an artist, but also a pioneer in industrial design. His cutlery designs are sold worldwide, and is represented in some of the world's largest design museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Among his designs are Det riflede from 1952, Maya from 1961, and Una from 1973. designs won gold medals at the Triennale in Milan in 1954, 1957 and 1960.
